Mobile Fashion Week 2018 Runway Exclusive:
Mermania Swimwear is slated to throw some serious shade on the runway this year – and we do not hate it.
With the runway show only days away, we are excited to announce that things are going to get a bit shady on the runway – in the absolute best way possible! You heard it here first – our favorite sunglass brand, Maho Shades, is diving right in to Mob Fashion Week and making the ultimate splash with a little help from Mermania Swimwear.
Mermania Swimwear, designed by Megan van der Betch of Mobile, AL, is returning to the runway for the third time for Mobile Fashion Week 2018. This year the swimwear designer and Mob Fashion Week veteran is pairing her swimsuits with sunnies from Orange Beach-based designer Maho Shades. Here is what you need to know about the designers and why this collaboration will be so epic:
Mermania Swimwear: Where Mermaids are real.
Megan, the owner and creative mind behind Mermania Swimwear, has played an integral part in growing the local fashion and design community here in Mobile.
Megan found her niche designing swimwear that fills a certain void in the market – the fact that it is difficult for a women to find a swimsuit that “looks good […], is affordable, and is cute.” Thus, in September 2015, Mermania was created right here on Mobile Bay.
We fell in love with the designs of this self-proclaimed “Mermaid at Heart” the second the suits hit the runway during Mobile Fashion Week 2016 and cannot wait to see what kind of Mermaid fashion Mermania Swimwear has in store for this year’s show. The combination of Megan’s suits paired with Maho Shades is sure to be a highlight of the night.
Maho Shades: Handmade, ultra-premium shades that won’t break the bank.
Maho has always been headquartered on the beach. The brand was born in the US Virgin Islands and has since found its home in beautiful Orange Beach, Alabama.
At Maho Shades, every pair is designed on the Gulf Coast for life on the water. Kris and Alex Andereson present a product that is the perfect marriage of fashion and function – think of combining your favorite pair of designer sunnies with sportsfishing quality lenses.
The stylish sunnies are inspired by travel and architecture and handmade in family-run factories, offering incredible clarity and 100% UVA/UVB protection. The lenses all have premium anti-reflective, water and oil repelling, and anti-scratch coatings, making them perfect for days spent on Mobile Bay and a life lived on the Gulf Coast.
Maho Shades is a small business that has some big waves in the fashion industry – they have been featured in GQ (The Best New Sunglasses for Fall), The New Yorker, and recently won the style category of Garden&Gun’s Made in the South Awards 2017.

MADE IN THE SOUTH AWARDS 2017
Style category winner Kris and Alex Anderson’s sunglasses are tailor-made for style and sport
Sunglasses rank high on the list of the world’s frequently lost objects. For Kris and Alex Anderson, that familiar exasperation turned to inspiration. Right after the couple moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2014, they both shed costly pairs while paddleboarding St. John’s paradisiacal Maho Bay. “We figured we aren’t the only people who want high-quality sunglasses that aren’t so expensive you’re afraid to wear them,” says Kris, whose corporate law background included eyewear clients. Nine research-intensive months later, Maho Shades was hatched. Even mosquito-borne disease couldn’t stop the venture—when Zika hit the islands at the same time Alex became pregnant, the Andersons relocated the business to Alabama’s Gulf Coast.
Alex, a former interior designer, shepherds the brand’s fashionable styles. Inspired by architecture and named for favorite destinations, from Ibiza to Nashville, the glasses also include performance characteristics you’d want for sportfishing and other outdoor pursuits—durability, color enhancement, glare reduction, and more (Garden&Gun).
